With sustainability at the top of the agenda, the OHI team needed a systematic and efficient way to track their emissions and populate their ESG reports. With Gardenia Analytics, the OHI team has a daily view of their key ESG metrics and has completed its 2024 CDP report in 1 week.

Challenge

OHI needed an automated solution to measure their global emissions data across 4 countries and 18 locations.

In addition, OHI was looking to improve the efficiency of its ESG reporting process. With an upcoming CDP report to file, OHI faced the task of extracting, verifying and reporting thousands of data points.

Solution

Gardenia provides OHI with an integrated solution that automates data capture, validation, GHG inventory calculation, and ESG reporting.

The core of Gardenia's reporting solution is Report GenAI, an automated ESG reporting tool developed in partnership with the AWS Prototyping and Cloud Engineering (PACE) team. Report GenAI is an ESG reporting tool that uses agentic generative AI to automate much of the disclosure process, reliably handling data from diverse sources, and producing high-quality, auditable draft reports for expert review and submission.

OHI partnered with Gardenia Technologies to deploy an AI-powered ESG analytics engine built on Amazon Bedrock and Amazon S3. The solution used agentic GenAI to orchestrate document ingestion, data classification, emissions calculation, and disclosure generation—automating what was previously weeks of manual work.

Key AWS Services Used:
  • Amazon Bedrock: Hosted Gardenia’s agentic GenAI model, powering natural language reasoning and template completion
  • Amazon S3: Served as the scalable document lake for supplier invoices, product specs, and ESG policies
  • AWS Lambda: Automated real-time data processing pipelines
  • Amazon CloudWatch: Enabled performance monitoring of model execution
  • AWS Glue (optional): Supported optional data transformations and cleaning workflows

OHI achieved 75% faster ESG disclosure reporting, improving internal productivity and external transparency. The project enabled OHI to:

  • Track GHG Inventory and Customer Selected KPIs daily
  • Populate their CDP reports 75% faster with the Report GenAI reporting module
  • Use granular data to inform their emissions reduction strategy

Comments from The OHI Team

“In previous years we needed one month to complete the report, this year it took just one week. Around 70% of the questions answered by the AI were correct. For the rest, the ‘Ask the Agent’ feature made it easy to draft our own answers. The tool was a great support and made things much easier compared to previous years.”

Data Integration and Calculation

Before working with Gardenia, OHI’s sustainability data was held in various repositories across 4 geographies, and it was time consuming to retrieve it for calculations and reporting. OHI chose to partner with Gardenia because of its ability to ingest, verify and calculate emissions data in an automated way across global portfolios.

Gardenia set up automated pipelines for data retrieval and centralised the GHG relevant data. These included daily API calls to client systems, and notifications for sharing additional files at a pre-defined frequency. The Gardenia platform also runs validation checks to ensure that data is complete and accurate.

Tracking Emissions Data in Real-Time

Gardenia’s automated solution eliminates the need for manual emissions calculations. The OHI team now has one place to easily see their GHG inventory and Client Selected KPIs daily, and can use this data to track the impact of their climate initiatives.

Customer Selected KPIs

Here are some examples of KPIs the OHI team tracks through the Gardenia dashboard:

  • Aviation Fuel Consumed
  • Passengers (by leg and by flight)
  • Weight (Pax/Baggage/Cargo)
  • RPK (Revenue Passenger Kilometers)
  • RTK (Revenue Ton Kilometer)
  • Various Flight Hours Related
  • Metrics

Using The Data to Inform Innovation

Each industry and business has unique KPIs that are most relevant to their emissions tracking and intensity calculations. So alongside our clients' core GHG inventory, we set up custom set of KPIs.

A key challenge in aviation emissions tracking is calculating Revenue Ton Kilometer (RTK) metrics and Revenue Passenger Kilometers (RPK), which require complex calculations combining passenger numbers, cargo weight, and distance traveled for each flight leg. Gardenia automates these calculations, providing OHI with granular insights to inform their emissions reduction strategy.

Turning Data into Reports in Minutes

For their 2024 CDP report, OHI needed to respond to 138 questions across multiple modules. Gardenia's Report GenAI tool automatically generated 97% of responses, with 70% requiring no edits. The platform reduced reporting time from one month to one week, while improving response quality and consistency.

The AI-Powered Reporting Process

Tool Set-up

Questionnaires for major frameworks have been developed and can be loaded to the platform directly. If a new standard or a custom questionnaire is required, it can be uploaded to the tool.

Knowledge Base Integration

Next, company-specific data and documents are provided to the Report GenAI tool. The tool can source data from: direct queries against our clients’ calculated emissions database, internal documents (see “Client Inputs” section), as well as internet searches for public information.

Pre-fill, Review, Submit

The Report GenAI tool generates “first-pass” responses to all questions. The user can review the answers, with the ability to view the references, and chat with the AI Assistant to iterate on answers. The user can choose when the answer is ‘approved’ and click ‘submit’ to answer the question.

Client Inputs

While not all sources are required, more comprehensive data improves initial coverage of questions answered by the AI. These are the key inputs shared by the client for the reporting knowledge base.

Example inputs:

  • Carbon Emissions Inventory
  • Company Policies (e.g. Climate Change Policy, Net Zero Goals)
  • Prior Reports (e.g. prior CDP submissions, Group’s Sustainability Report)
  • Analyses (e.g. Risk Assessments, Materiality Assessments)

The Technology Under the Hood: AWS Infrastructure for Secure, Scalable, Accurate and Transparent ESG Automation

Why AWS
AWS enabled Gardenia to build an enterprise-grade ESG intelligence layer that was:
  • Scalable: Able to ingest and process hundreds of thousands of records in minutes
  • Secure: Compliant with ISO 27001 and GHG Protocol data governance standards
  • Interoperable: Easily integrated with OHI's systems
  • Future-proof: Prepared for upcoming CSRD, TCFD, and SEC reporting frameworks

Here's a look at the data architecture powering the reporting module used by OHI:

Security:
In the setup phase, the Report GenAI agent is configured and authorized to access ESG and emissions databases, client document stores (emails, prior reports, datasheets), and public web searches. All client data resides in encrypted Amazon S3 buckets (with VPC endpoints), and relational data in Amazon RDS—both within Gardenia’s private AWS cloud. This ensures robust data residency, private network access, and strict identity/access controls using AWS IAM and Cognito.

Scalability:
The Report GenAI frontend is hosted as a containerized application, managed by load-balanced and auto-scaled Amazon ECS with Fargate. This setup ensures the platform remains responsive during peak periods and operates resource-efficiently throughout the year.

Accuracy:
Gardenia’s agentic reasoning engine leverages the ReAct framework with leading generative models (via Amazon Bedrock) to break down complex queries, retrieve relevant internal/external data, and iteratively refine answers. Hosted on AWS Lambda and integrated through LangChain, this system can orchestrate tailored data queries and structured analysis. Text-to-SQL tools generate compliant analytical queries, and RAG-based engines (using Faiss plus Bedrock embeddings) retrieve and reason over unstructured enterprise documents.

Transparency

Every answer from Report GenAI is cited and auditable, with validation at two levels:

  • Human-in-the-loop: ESG experts can review and modify AI-generated responses, verifying factual accuracy and compliance within an interactive chat interface.
  • AI-powered assessment: Advanced LLMs on Amazon Bedrock review and score each answer for accuracy, completeness, and framework alignment, flagging any that may require additional review.

This dual-validation system, with transparent reasoning traces and documented corrections, underpins a strong quality management framework that continually improves via feedback.

Results: Powering Climate Innovation

With Gardenia, the OHI team can continue to advance on their ambitious climate goals. OHI now has a centralised and live view of its GHG inventory and Selected Client KPIs, making it simple to monitor progress in a systematic way. OHI has an efficient reporting process using Gardenia’s Report GenAI tool. Their CDP submission demonstrated the power of automation - 97% of questions were answered automatically by the tool, with 70% of these being approved without any modifications. For the rest, the OHI team used the AI chatbot to assist with drafting and editing. This transformed a month-long process into a focused week of review.

Going forward, OHI plans to expand their use of Gardenia's capabilities to:

  • Monitor Sustainability Performance: OHI will continue using Gardenia's platform to track emissions daily across their global operations.
  • Simulate Reduction Strategies: The team plans to use Gardenia's Reduction Strategies Dashboards to explore different reduction pathways.
  • Expand Reporting: Beyond CDP, OHI plans to report with frameworks such as CSRD. Gardenia's AI reporting assistant will help streamline these new requirements.
