Enabling Sustainable Cement with Automated Carbon Accounting

Shree Digvijay Cement is a mid-size cement manufacturer based in India, committed to climate leadership through the Cement Sustainability Initiative (CSI) and UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Before partnering with Gardenia, the client used a largely manual carbon accounting workflow. The approach was time-consuming and made it difficult to get a complete, real-time view of their carbon footprint. 

Looking to advance their climate action, Shree Digvijay needed a solution that could provide accurate, up-to-date emissions data without burdening their team with additional work or processes. With Gardenia, Shree Digvijay was able to seamlessly connect data from across their existing operational systems and centralise it into a single platform for analysis and reporting. 

Partnering with Gardenia

Shree Digvijay partnered with Gardenia, leveraging its automated solution for emissions data capture through to reporting. Gardenia can extract all the necessary data from the client's existing systems, meaning that the client doesn't need to set up any new processes or allocate additional responsibilities. 

Automated Data Extraction: Unlocking Insights in Client Data

Gardenia set up automated data pipelines to extract data from sources and systems the client was already using, such as their Procurement, Process Monitoring, Quality Control, and others. Gardenia was able to collect all required insights from existing client data sources - so no new data or processes were requested from the client. Through AI-enabled automation, the platform is able to process and enrich available client data to generate the insights needed for a comprehensive GHG inventory.  At this stage in the process, the client ensured that their sustainability reporting would not increase the data collection burden.

Native GenAI Data Extraction Tools

Gardenia leverages GenAI tools to automate data extraction from sources such as invoices and utility readings. One tool in Gardenia's platform is AWS Textract, a machine learning service that automatically extracts data from scanned text documents and images.

Calculating Emissions At The Most Granular Level

By leveraging automation to process and enrich thousands of lines of client data, the Gardenia platform is able to attribute emissions to processes and products throughout the value chain. This enables the application of unit-based emission factors, which give a more accurate reading of a product's carbon footprint compared to using industry averages or spend-based estimates. With this granular, product-level emissions data, Shree Digvijay gained deep visibility into the carbon impacts across their operations. 

Expanding the Inventory to all GCCA-Mandated Categories

In addition to automating existing calculations, Gardenia expanded the client's emissions inventory to cover all categories mandated by the Global Cement and Concrete Association (GCCA). The GCCA plays a leading role in setting sustainability standards and guidelines for the cement and concrete industry worldwide. By incorporating readily available supplementary data, Gardenia expanded the inventory to include 3 new emissions categories, ensuring the client's inventory comprehensively addressed the full scope of emissions categories required by the GCCA framework.

Web Dashboards: A Full Suite of Tools for Exploring, Managing & Reporting Emissions

Comprehensive ESG data is presented in web app dashboards and refreshed daily. Dashboards include interactive tools for interrogating emissions sources, simulating reduction strategies, setting and tracking targets, and reporting.

Exploring Emissions Reduction Strategies

The reduction simulation dashboard provided Shree Digvijay with the tools to model reduction scenarios, calculate the resulting emissions reductions, and understand the impacts across different emission scopes.

This holistic view enables teams to weigh the trade-offs between emission reductions, financial costs, and the distribution of emission reductions across the value chain.

As well as target selection, the Gardenia platform provides live tracking tools to monitor the progress of reduction initiatives.

Optimised Sustainability Reporting

Gardenia's ACE (Accuracy, Currency, Efficiency) initiative replaced manual workflows with an automated ESG data delivery system, enabling the client to track, report and reduce their emissions with ease.

Gardenia provided Shree Digvijay with a live GHG inventory, requiring no ongoing upkeep. This automated solution empowered Shree Digvijay's sustainability experts to focus on developing and executing strategic emissions reduction initiatives, rather than spending time on manual data collection and calculations.  The granular, value chain-wide visibility into carbon impacts gave Shree Digvijay the insights to identify, assess, and implement the most effective decarbonization strategies across their operations.
